is calling for entries for its 2011 Communications Contest.

How to submit entries

Eligibility

Who is eligible to enter?

1. The Communications Contest is open to individual journalists only (as opposed to organizations such as a newspaper as a whole or a department as a whole (e.g. sports staff or unidentified individuals within a whole department).

2. The contest is open to:

  • Working communicator members of WPA
  • Working communicators non-members of WPA
  • Student communicators

3. For the purpose of this contest, a working communicator is defined as anyone producing work for a publication, online or in print, produced in Washington State in any of the categories listed on the Category Page of this website.

4. For the purpose of this contest, a student is defined as a person who has been enrolled at a college or university in Washington State during calendar year 2011.

How much does it cost to be a member of WPA?
Membership fees are:

  • Working Communicators:  $20 per year
  • Student:  $10 per year

How much does it cost to enter the contest?

  1.  WPA members and student entry fees are $10 for the first entry from any given individual and $5 for each additional entry from that same person.
  2. Non-members of WPA fees are $30 per person for the first entry from any given individual and $15 for each additional entry from that same individual. 

Working Communicators eligibility
For the purposes of this contest, a working communucator is defined as anyone producing work for a publication produced in Washington State in any of the categories listed on the Category page of this website.

What work will be accepted?

  1. All entries must be in one of the categories listed on the Category Page of this website.
  2. All entries must have been published between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011.

Will blogs be accepted?
Blogs will be accepted in any of the categories on the Category Page in the subcategory Other Publications.

Is there a limit to the number of entries per individual entrant?

  1. Individuals may enter three entries in each category, and may enter in as many separate categories as they wish.  However, any given piece of work may be submitted in only one category, not in multiple categories. For example, you may enter three separate pieces of work in the category  (01) Breaking News, subcategory (A) daily newspaper. But you may not enter the same work in General News, for example, or any other category or subcategory.
  2. An entry may include the work of up to three co-creators, including the individual submitting the entry, and all names should appear on the entry form.  In the case of an award for co-creators each individual receives an awards certificate and recognition at the awards ceremony. 

What constitutes an acceptable entry?
     Every entry will consist of three parts:

  1. The entry form
  2. The entry itself
  3. The entry fee (and membership fee if you choose to join)

How do I submit an entry electronically?

A complete submission will consist of four components:
1.  Pay Pal Payment Online
2. The entry itself.
a. If the entry is currently accessible online (such as a newspaper website, online magazine or blog), the fully qualified URL will already have been included in the printed entry form, but should be submitted within your email if you are submitting your entry electronically.
b. If the entry is no longer accessible online, then it will be necessary to append it to the transmitted
e-mail as an attachment.
3. An entry form. Download the entry form as a Word document, complete it and include it as an attachment. The entry form will be available after you pay your entry fee.

How may fees be paid?

  1. Fees (and membership dues) can be paid via PayPal available on this website.
  2. Fees (and membership dues) may be paid by check and mailed to the contest director.

How do I submit an entry electronically?
1. If the entry is currently accessible online (such as on a newspaper website, online magazine or blog) the fully qualified URL must be included on the entry form and also must be submitted within your e-mail if you are submitting your entry electronically. For verification and evaluation purposes, you must include a working web link, a permalink or a printed copy of the material with identification or supporting material sufficient to verify that the work was indeed published in 2011.
2. If the entry is no longer accessible online, you must submit your entry in printed form by conventional mail to the contest director and include material with identification or supporting material sufficient to verify that the work was indeed published in 2011.
3. You may complete the entry form electronically and attach it to the e-mail by which you submit your entry.

How do I submit an entry by mail?
If the entry itself is a hard copy (such as a printed magazine, a printed newsletter or a printed newspaper article) it should be accompanied by a hard copy entry form. Click here for a printable entry form.

What should be included in a mailed-in entry?
If it is a newspaper article, the tear sheet should include the entire page(s) on which the entry was published.  If it is a magazine article, the entire magazine should be submitted.  If it is an article in another publication such as a newsletter, the entire publication should be included.

What is the Communications Contest deadline?
All entries must be dated electronically or postmarked by February 24, 2012.

When will winners be notified?
Winners will be notified April 1, 2012.

How and where will awards be presented?
Awards will be presented at the WPA Awards Luncheon at the Seattle Museum of Flight, 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 21, 2012.
